Inlays and Onlays are ceramic fillings that are used to restore cavities that are too large and not suitable for composite fillings however they can be managed without the need for crowns. Inlays/Onlays are superior to composite fillings in terms of aesthetics and functionality. Inlays and Onlays need less preparation of the tooth and it is possible to keep more of the natural structure of the tooth intact. Generally, this type of restoration is used mainly for the back teeth.
The size of tooth damage and the area that is being restored is the main difference between inlays and Onlays (see illustration below). In terms of costs, Inlays/Onlays are more expensive than composite fillings however the benefits of longevity and the maintenance of dental health are worth paying the extra cost.
Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
- Inlays/Onlays not only protect your teeth from direct chewing load and wear they also prevent decay formation. Inlays/Onlays are far superior to any other type of filling.
- Inlays/Onlays provide a much better fit than any other type of fillings as they as are custom-made. Inlays/Onlays can be used for tight spaces, such as cavities between the teeth.
- Preparation of the tooth is minimal and more enamel retained offers better contouring at the gum line. This also keeps the soft tissues healthy.
Inlays and Onlays Procedure
- Consultation, evaluation of the X-rays, and clinical examination
- Local anesthetic is administered
- Preparation of the tooth.
- The first step is to take an impression of your tooth using an intra-oral camera or the conventional method of using a mould filled with dental paste that you will be asked to bite into. The impression is sent to the on-site laboratory where the Inlays/Onlays will be made.
- A temporary restoration will be placed
- At your next appointment, the Inlays/Onlays will be fitted and bonded
- To ensure the bite is comfortable any needed adjustments will be made for a proper fit.
