A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration (fixed dental prostheses) that permanently attaches an artificial tooth to adjacent teeth or dental implants to replace one or more missing teeth. There are several disadvantages of missing teeth, which include biting problems, speech impediments, an increased risk of periodontal disease, and temporomandibular joint disorders.
In bridgework, replacement teeth are used to fill a gap created by tooth loss. These replacement teeth are cemented to natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. These anchoring teeth are called abutments. A replacement tooth called a pontic is fixed to the crowns that cover the abutments.
Dental Bridge Material
A bridge can be made from a variety of materials, just as a crown can be made from a variety of materials. In order to match your natural teeth’s colour, crowns can be made in a variety of colours. Based on the location of the missing tooth, aesthetic considerations, and cost, your dentist can guide you in choosing the right material and brand.
Dental Bridge Benefits
- You’ll be able to bite, chew, and speak properly again as well as regain your smile once again
- Ensures that the natural teeth do not shift or drift into the hole created by the missing tooth
- Keep your face from changing as a result of tooth loss
- Strong and durable with a natural look
Dental Bridge Procedure
Step-By-Step Procedure
1st Appointment
- Your surgeon will examine your teeth to match the shade of your crowns with your natural teeth, evaluate your X-ray, and provide you with a consultation.
- A local anaesthetic will be administered
- The teeth next to the missing one(s) will be prepared by removing a small amount of tooth structure.
- Using an intra-oral camera or conventional mould filled with dental paste that you will be asked to bite into an impression of your tooth will be taken. Your tooth impression will be sent to the dental laboratory that will produce your crown.
- A temporary bridge using temporary cement will be placed. At this time you should avoid food that is sticky or hard and it’s a good idea to avoid chewing from that side until your final fitting appointment.
2nd Appointment
- At this appointment, the fitting will be checked for bite, size, shape, and colour. If everything is perfect, in some cases, the bridge can be polished and cemented at this appointment
3rd Appointment
- At this appointment, any final adjustment, polishing, and permanent fixing of the bridge will be done. In some cases, extra one or two appointments may be needed to arrange for the perfect fitting
